The problem with asbestos isn’t necessarily that it poses an immediate health risk. In fact, left undisturbed, you can live in a house built with asbestos for a couple of years, before it becomes a health hazard. Those with the most severe health affects are usually those exposed the longest to asbestos – like asbestos factory workers.
Additionally factors like natural disasters and time, can cause asbestos – that were otherwise negligible – to be released into the home. So they’re dormant until they’re disturbed. Once disturbed, asbestos will accumulate in your system until it becomes fatal.

Fair warning, doctors recommend that it’s best to contact asbestos experts to do the work for you, since they’re more equipped to deal with potential hazards. Bear in mind that you can’t eyeball asbestos, experts know best how to proceed and how to locate asbestos in your home. Here’s what you can do.
Take samples of fiber from your home to a lab for asbestos test. There are a few common places to fetch your sample from.
- Insulation – attics and wall insulations built before the 1980’s.
- Heat and Water pipes – scrape both within and the exterior to get comprehensive samples
- Roofing and sidings – including sheets and shingles
- Ceiling and floor – coatings, and siding gaps
