Fluid shapes, natural lines, fictional characters, patterns and colour come to life in Claire's fist solo exhibition, Monster, at The Butcher Shop.

Since childhood, Clare has experimented with drawing and illustration, leading her to interior design, fine arts and finally to graphic design where she has discovered her passion. Here she learnt to integrate her love for illustration with logo design and type treatment, t-shirt designs, music artwork, fabric design and many other applications.

Graduating Graphic Design in 2008, Claire received Keith + Lottie's Beaumont Award, recognising the development of her own artistic style within her design practice. It is these artistic tendencies which have surfaced in the form of Monster.

A rare glimpse into the artistic process, this exhibition offers an insight into the decisions artists make when developing their work, and their hopes and fears about how it will be received by their audience.

Presenting work by eminent senior artists such as Aleks Danko and Rose Nolan alongside work by recent graduates such as Tom Polo and Kirsty Hulm, the exhibition highlights that the aspirations and anxieties that accompany the making of an artwork remain constant throughout an artist's career. The approach taken to the subject ranges widely, from Andrew McQualter's poetic and earnest wall drawings about the role of the artist in society, to the bitingly funny videos by Rachel Scott about the pitfalls of working from her parents' garage.

Ultimately, what these frank and deeply personal works reveal is that the desire of the artist to communicate and connect with the viewer is the driving force in why they do the things they do.

Featuring a new series of large format photographs and a wallpaper mural this exhibition highlights work specially developed for PICA focusing on Western Australia's resource industries.

Examining the semi-permanent, fly-in-fly out lifestyles of regions such as the Pilbara, Gestures of the Landscape delves into the impermanence and transience of WA's mining towns.

Janet Biggs' video, Anana Dream examines the role of free will in the lives of polar bears in captivity. Anana Dream is the dream of things that can never be and the loss of things unknown. Now on the endangered list due to their shrinking sea ice habitat, polar bears face the prospect of survival in captivity or extinction.

Biggs' video takes its name from the Inuit word for pretty, which is also the name of one of the bears she filmed. Anana and her brother Lee swim in perfect synchronisation. On initial viewing, their movement, grace, and power is awe inspiring.

The music, a love song from the 1982 film Blade Runner, presents a romantic relationship between the two bears, and by extension examines an overly romanticised relationship between humans and animals of prey.

Upon continued looking, the polar bears synchronised swimming reveals itself as the mind-numbing, repetitive behavior of animals in captivity.

A guillotine meets a bonsai, a squid meets an atom bomb and Fidel meets Felix. In a world of registered trademarks, is everything symbolic due to its familiarity and its context?
