The winning sculptures from the Make it with Newspaper contest are on display in The Place on the Mezzanine level in the State Library from Sunday 13th December to Sunday 31st January 2010. Winners are all primary and secondary students throughout WA.

Dominic Redfern presents two major new video works at PICA; Stonewall and Mythos. Drawing on traditions of both video and performance art, Redfern uses self-portraiture, fiction and documentary to explore the intersection of site, screen and identity. Shot in 2008 for a solo exhibition at the Centre d' Art Marnay in rural France, Stonewall extends Redfern's investigation of the dynamics of monologue and performance in a selected environment.

For PICA, Stonewall will be presented in an expanded format and accompanied by Mythos, a second multi-screen installation that unifies his filmed landscape studies spanning three years. Dominic Redfern's work has been exhibited and screened nationally and internationally, including in the UK, USA, Germany, Korea, Japan, Thailand and Finland. He is a Senior Lecturer in Video Art and the Studio Coordinator of Media Arts at RMIT, Melbourne.

To 'show character' or to be a 'person of character' is perhaps meaningless in a world where the thoughts and actions of any individual can be readily uploaded and disseminated at any given moment. One character becomes as ubiquitous as the next.

Guest Curator Jonah Dames has brought together a group of Australian artists at various points in their careers, whose works in the show try to describe the fleeting idea of character. The result is a diverse array of drawings, prints, sculptures, installation and video works that will be shown in PICA's Westend Gallery.

Inbetween is an exploration of the supernatural by Melbourne-based artist Richard Lewer. The work derives three 'case studies' from collected and stories of encounters with ghosts and paranormal activity.

Lewer's hand-drawn pencil animations play on the supernatural as a metaphoric device in movies, plays and books, and comes replete with howling winds, clattering horse hooves and spooky sounds. Inbetween is a dark and playful investigation into representations of the unexplainable.

Focusing on the darker side of human behaviour, place and social identity, Richard Lewer's work also records subjective encounters with family, sport, religious and criminal subjects, leading to insightful and often absurd narrative reflections on ethics and mortality.

Two photographic images by Emma Van Dordrecht are on show from Saturday 24th of October at Brave New World. The images were taken during a break from her regular commissioned work during an around the world holiday.

Determined to travel light, without the distraction of choice of lenses, choice of film or even choice of exposure, Emma opted for light point and shoot type cameras to get back to the art of seeing. The resultant images were shot on a plastic Holga camera; this type of camera allowed Emma to step back from the highly technical demands of commercial photography and embrace the low-fi attributes a Holga presents.

Setting out each day on a 6 week journey, she rediscovered the joy of capturing things the eye and heart responded to quickly, without thought. Not being one for exacting perfection or great at verbalising her images, Emma finds she can't be rational about what she sees and likes to snap… her hope is that some else will see them in same way and also enjoy her irreverent view.

Emma reiterates that the wing shot was amusing. “ I was aware I was really just shooting someone else's brilliance (as so much of photography can be) but liked it enough to want to remember and take it home with me.”
