After a decade showing her work in group exhibitions and showcases in galleries throughout Australia, award-winning local ceramic artist Josephine Pittman is proud to present an.ti.bod.y, her debut solo show, at the Central Institute of Technology, Showcase Gallery (Central Tafe, Northbridge) from February 12.
The exhibition comes after the Leederville-based artist was invited to spend March of 2009 as the Artist in Residence in the Ceramics department of Central Institute of Technology.
Her work models the internal battleground of the human body through porcelain handbuilt sculptural forms. It playfully interrogates notions of disease and the microscopic detail of what it means to be human, as the body remains locked in a constant struggle against the 21st century’s bombardment of external invaders. Josephine’s work will take a microscopic view of the battle between antibodies and the forces of infection and stage it in larger sculptural form.

PICA collaborates with the Perth International Arts Festival to present the first solo exhibition in Australia of highly acclaimed Danish Artist, Jeppe Hein. An exciting survey of major works by the artist will be brought together and presented both inside the vast galleries of PICA, and outside in the busy Cultural Centre square.

The artist's much celebrated water fountain, Appearing Rooms, will be shown outdoors in front of PICA and will be complemented indoors with a selection of his significant works which illustrate further the breadth of ground-breaking ideas include the mirrored maze, Spiral Labyrinth 1 and Smoking Bench and his neon light installations. For the first time Australian audiences will be able to experience Hein's interactive, playful and critical works that have placed him at the forefront of the contemporary international art scene.

Jeppe Hein was born in 1974 in Copenhagen Denmark. He lives and works in both Copenhagen and Berlin. The artist comes to Perth following an important solo exhibition in ARoS Museum, Denmark. His works have been shown at the Tate Modern and Hayward Gallery, London; The Pompidou Centre, Paris; PS1, New York; and the Mori Museum, Tokyo. Last year Jeppe Hein collaborated on a new project with the artist Dan Graham in Germany.

Previous recipient of the prestigious Samstag scholarship and MFA graduate from the Chelsea College of Art in London, Perth artist Sarah Elson has conceived her most expansive body of work yet for a solo exhibition in PICA's Westend Gallery.

Sarah Elson's practice involves making painstakingly intricate castings of small plant and insects; flower bulbs, leaves, burrs, cicadas and beetles. Her sculptures are often mounted on pins studded directly into the gallery walls like displaced specimens. Her interest in the politics of artifacts and materials and how value is perceived is developed in Elson's laboratory-like use of PICA's gallery by amassing together different metals, delicate casts and organic forms.

PICA presents a trilogy of new video works by Brisbane artist Grant Stevens, in response to his time in Los Angeles. Screened together for the first time, If Things Were Different (2009), Crushing (2009), and Really Really (2007) are three videos in which Stevens exposes the deep ambivalence of the human condition.

The works oscillate between the fanciful and romantic to the abrasively cynical by drawing on tropes of Hollywood film, advertising or bad day-time TV and purposefully mishandle media devices of editing, framing, cropping,and incorporating text or muzak.

The artist, who now lives and works between Queensland and California explains that '...unpacking and testing out those ambiguities and ambivalences are what drive me to make art - to try to make works that draw you in while making you feel uncomfortable or unsure about what you are looking at' (Eyeline, 2008).

CONTAINED comprised assemblages constructed from plastic deposited on Greta Beach, Christmas island via the Indian Ocean. With names like Invasion and Detained, these new works transform the detritus into intricate miniature worlds. Williams is the narrator, inviting us to engage with the lives and histories of the Malay and Chinese people who live on this remote island, as well as the refugees who pass by.

Are you a creative, young Australian on the cusp of a great artistic career? You’ve got the talent, the vision and the drive it’s going to take – but do you have the professional skill set, one on one support and national network to match? JUMP can make sure that you do.

JUMP directly supports the career development of artists aged 18-30, and in the first five years of their professional practice, by facilitating mentorships with professional artists regarded highly in their chosen artform.

Mentored artists receive funding for a creative concept, to be realised through a flexible relationship with their chosen mentor across an annual 10-month mentorship period.

Between mentors’ established networks and the JUMP program’s national reach, mentees also receive direct access to a significant range of professional development resources, showcasing opportunities and industry engagement activities.

As Australia’s newest and largest artist mentoring program, JUMP is serious about championing our nation’s next generation of arts industry leaders, and ensuring that artform, geography and cultural diversity are no barrier to identifying and promoting artistic excellence.

Supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, JUMP is managed nationally by Youth Arts Queensland, and will be delivered in 2010 in collaboration with inaugural state partners Propel Youth Arts WA and Carclew Youth Arts (SA).
