Six local, emerging artists interpret the theme 'Mythology' for this exhibition, opening 2pm on Saturday 17th April in KURB Gallery's new space at 214 William St (opposite Brass Monkey).

The artists participating cross multiple disciplines including oil painting, digital painting, drawing and photography.

The exhibition showcases new works from Richard Healy, Simon Boxer, David Charles Collins, Tanya De Souza-Meally, Jeffrey Phillips, and Jenna Downing.

Artworks are available for sale.

Light refreshments will be provided at the opening.

Hatched is Australia's most significant survey of emerging artists.

Heading into its 19th year, this landmark exhibition continues to provide an unparalleled opportunity for talented art school graduates to present their work in a professional gallery context alongside that of their national peers. It offers an all-important stepping-stone from the realm of education to the beginnings of a professional career as an artist.

This year 39 artists from 20 art schools across the country were selected to grace the vast galleries of PICA. Bear witness to these contemporary pioneers as they head into new artistic territory with their extreme mix of expanded drawing and painting practices, soft architecture and aural environments - amongst other eye, mind and ear-bending aesthetic experiments!

Hatched expands further in 2010 with the launch of the Doctor Harold Schenberg Art Prize, an annual award of $20,000 that will be presented to one Hatched artist each year. The Prize has been set up to allow an outstanding art school graduate to invest in the development of their practice through travel, research or production support.

A half day examination of those moments or zones of transition that artists aspire to make in the development of their careers; from art school to artist run initiatives, from group to solo shows, from part-time to full-time professional artistic careers, and from home town to national or international representation. An esteemed panel of guest speakers will offer their personal and professional insights into how artists might best navigate these transitions.

Speakers include:

Callum Morton
Internationally renowned Melbourne based artist, Callum Morton has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas. He represented Australia at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007) and held a major solo show of his work at PICA in that same year. He has recently exhibited at the Scape Biennial, New Zealand (2008); The Fundament Foundation, the Netherlands (2009); and the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art (2010).

Profesor Donal Fitzpatrick
Head of School of Design & Art, Curtin University. Originally from New Zealand, Prof. Fitzpatrick has also taught at Charles Darwin University and Queensland University of Technology.

Rebeca Heald
Director of New Contemporaries, the annual exhibition of work by recent fine art graduates in the UK, Heald has worked across curatorial and education departments at Sadie Coles HQ, Tate Britain, and the Hayward Gallery.

PICA director, Amy Barrett-Lennard, will chair an open Q&A session following the presentations.

Olga’s work addresses identity and memory and how we link it to notions of place, tradition, culture and customs. Theo has wrapped domestic objects in brown paper, giving them new life and identities. A boxing glove is transformed into a ‘paper punch’, a pepper grinder into a ‘paper mill’, and a toy wooden plane becomes a ‘paper plane’. The simplicity of the brown paper strips the objects of individuality, almost like home-brand objects, yet their distinctive shapes still place them from specific periods of time. Theo has grouped the pieces so that they form a narrative; relationships give rise to new interpretations.

Until a stranger punctures the pretty complacency of their lives. The miasmic seeds sewn into their love by his soft suggestions are explosive, undermining all they hold dear. Once the fuse is lit, question turns to doubt; doubt to suspicion; and suspicion to hateful conviction.

As desperation mounts and self-preservation kicks in, fear sets them on a slippery road of moral compromise and we learn just how far a couple will go to reclaim their piece of peace.

This is social-domestic terrorism at its best.

The Going Away and the Coming Back : Karen Djordjevic

This exhibition features a collection of black and white scapes from Karen Djordjevic's journeys around the globe. Using a 35mm SLR camera and shooting with black and white film, these resonant images are in the tradition of Magnum Photography. Karen's style of photography is about taking the time to look and then re-look, as she finds quite often you see things differently, whilst also allowing for amazing moments to naturally unfold before her eyes.

YCulture Metro is a funding program that provides arts grants of up to $3,000 for young people aged between 12-26. YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.

YCulture can provide funds for projects (such as all-ages gigs) and skills development initiatives (such as workshops and creative developments).
