Wondered who those skeletons in your closet are? Want to know how to find a convict ancestor? Is there a reason the family never talks about one of the relatives? Where do you begin? Try our new website!

The State Library has now made it easier to trace your family history with the launch of 'Dead Reckoning: how to find your way through the genealogical jungle of Western Australia'. The new edition is available online making it available 24 hours a day. It can be accessed by typing in www.slwa.wa.gov.au/dead_reckoning.

Dead Reckoning, by Steve Howell, a Subject Specialist with the Battye Library, has drawn on the Western Australian historical resources within the State Library and the State Records Office to produce the most comprehensive guide available for researching Western Australian topics. As an online resource it can be regularly updated and kept current. Links to forms, Google maps, other websites, etc. are available for a more comprehensive search. With this powerful internet tool at your fingertips family skeletons may not stay in the closet much longer.

For those without their own computer access, you will find computers available at local libraries and Telecentres throughout the State.

Rounds is an exhibition of nine cutting-edge Western Australian artists that radically engage with issues of peer influence through a self-generating exhibition process. Working through a series of four cycles, it started on 5 September 2009 and continues through 27 March 2010. Each artist responds to a work made in the previous cycle by another artist in the group. The fruits of this ambitious and transparent creative process will be brought together and curated in a dynamic installation throughout PICA's central galleries, which will display the 32 artworks created in each of the four cycles.

Bevan Honey will develop an ambitious new body of work for PICA's Westend gallery consisting of futile machines alongside architectural and drawn elements that explore the opposing impulses of excess and restraint. Modernist utopias, failed buildings projects, financial burn outs and economic crashes and recovery are interrogated using scaled up drawings, models, stencils, mark making and inventions. Honey's expanded drawing practice contemplates multiple histories - art histories, as well as the cultural and geo-political histories of the state.

PICA is proud to present the first Australian showing of Berlin-based Ignacio Uriarte's new film entitled The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow (2009). Actor/comedian Michael Winslow, famous for his role in the slapstick Police Academy movies and his gifted ability to orally mimic any sound, is seen in a studio recording an oral history of the typewriter. The title of the work dictates the content of the film as the title phrase is typed repeatedly through the keystrokes of 32 different typewriters,each mimicked by Winslow.

Nearly every model of typewriter from the 1880s to the 1980s is sampled, allowing the viewer to contemplate a century of war correspondence, manifestoes, literary classics and private love letters.

A monthly LIVE collaborative hip hop jam with no bravado or bullshit!!
Every month a band of misfits is assembled who improvise with their varied/limited abilities on various instruments. Two hosts freestyle, drop verses and sing. All culminating in a big on the fly jam that may or may not make any sense!
The band plays two half hour sets. In the second set they encourage people from the audience who might be able to rap, sing or bang a drum to stand up and see what happens..

YCulture Metro is a funding program that provides arts grants of up to $3,000 for young people aged between 12-26. YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.

YCulture can provide funds for projects (such as all-ages gigs) and skills development initiatives (such as workshops and creative developments).

Applications are open all year with a guaranteed 10 day turn around.
