Rounds is one of the most talked about Western Australian collective art projects recently undertaken in Perth. Since opening in PICA’s central galleries by Lisa Scaffidi The Lord Mayor of Perth, on 25 June, thousands of people have visited the exhibition curated by Sarah Rowbottam and viewed the works that have been created by nine artists via a unique and challenging process.

The exhibition features Neil Aldum, Rebecca Baumann, Tim Carter, George Egerton-Warburton, Elise/Jürgen, Shannon Lyons, Bennett Miller, and Sarah Rowbottam, with each radically engaging with issues of peer influence and authorship through a specific methodology, taking place over seven months. Sarah Rowbottam invited the artists to make multiple new works over four demanding six-week cycles, whereby each artist handed over a work to another artist in the group who in-turn made a new piece in response.

The Rounds project is further extended with the production of the Rounds publication, a 192-page book featuring interviews, essays and insights into the complex Rounds process, which will be launched at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts on Friday 13 August.

The book brings together a carefully selected group of Perth-based curators, academics, writers and artists: Katie Lenanton, Christina Chau, Andrew Nicholls, Andrew Purvis, Andrew Varano, Gemma Weston, Jessyca Hutchens and Matthew Giles. Their essays offer distinct entry points into the practice of each artist that go beyond the usual descriptive, didactic catalogue essay. They also engage with their artists face-to-face in a set of interviews that reveal the personalities behind the artists.

Together, the essays and interviews capture a significant moment of Perth art, investigating what makes this influential group of emerging practitioners tick.

The book will be launched on Friday 13 August in the central space of PICA’s main galleries. Along with the artists and writers, the WA arts community will come together to celebrate the production of such an adventurous project. WA Artist and critic, Ric Spencer, will officially launch the book.

Lee is a cocky teenager who seems to attract trouble, Silent Leila's a 17 year-old Muslim girl looking for a way to fit in. She spends her Friday nights lost in the blurry universe of glossy celebrity magazines, Lee stealing booze from the supermarket.

They never meant to get mixed up in a murder, but after Billy Logan is killed, the teenagers are on the run and need a place to hide. As the winter closes in, Leila and Lee take flight to the Scottish Highlands. The caretaker Frank, full of drink and deceit, offers them shelter in a hunting lodge. Just as the pair find refuge, the first guests of the season begin to arrive.

Rounds is an exhibition of nine cutting-edge Western Australian artists that radically engage with issues of peer influence through a self-generating exhibition process. Working through a series of four cycles, it started on 5 September 2009 and continues through 27 March 2010. Each artist responds to a work made in the previous cycle by another artist in the group. The fruits of this ambitious and transparent creative process will be brought together and curated in a dynamic installation throughout PICA's central galleries, which will display the 32 artworks created in each of the four cycles.

Bevan Honey will develop an ambitious new body of work for PICA's Westend gallery consisting of futile machines alongside architectural and drawn elements that explore the opposing impulses of excess and restraint. Modernist utopias, failed buildings projects, financial burn outs and economic crashes and recovery are interrogated using scaled up drawings, models, stencils, mark making and inventions. Honey's expanded drawing practice contemplates multiple histories - art histories, as well as the cultural and geo-political histories of the state.

PICA is proud to present the first Australian showing of Berlin-based Ignacio Uriarte's new film entitled The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow (2009). Actor/comedian Michael Winslow, famous for his role in the slapstick Police Academy movies and his gifted ability to orally mimic any sound, is seen in a studio recording an oral history of the typewriter. The title of the work dictates the content of the film as the title phrase is typed repeatedly through the keystrokes of 32 different typewriters,each mimicked by Winslow.

Nearly every model of typewriter from the 1880s to the 1980s is sampled, allowing the viewer to contemplate a century of war correspondence, manifestoes, literary classics and private love letters.

YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.
