Outré Gallery is excited to be bringing US artist Josh SHAG Agle back down-under for another three city tour of Australia in August 2010. With exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth we will be presenting original paintings, super-sized giclee prints on canvas (in especially small editions), new serigraph prints and rare prints.
The William Street Northbridge exhibition will be the inaugural opening of the new Outré Gallery space in Perth. Having been selling and exhibiting artwork in Melbourne for the past 16 years, Sydney for the past 5, Outré Gallery is enthused to be opening a third location in Western Australia.

This exhibition is set to embrace Shag's new direction towards a darker mood, more surreal subject matter and more complex compositions.
Shag takes an artistic sidestep away from the retro iconography and lifestyle that has marked his career, with a whole new realm of crisply rendered dream-scenes, perfectly balanced hues and amazing narratives. These new style works will sit next to a collection of older prints and rare editions from the past.

The name of the exhibition refers to an exclusive (and mysterious) book that the artist has produced to accompany the paintings.

"Inscrutable Mystery Guide" is actually the little book that accompanies each small tiki painting. It's my hope that the books won't be seen by anyone except the person who owns one of those paintings. I want to bring them into my own little cult and tell them some secrets. - Josh Agle aka Shag

A gritty contemporary tale of young love, looming tragedy and the unexpected.

Lee is a cocky teenager who seems to attract trouble, Silent Leila's a 17 year-old Muslim girl looking for a way to fit in. She spends her Friday nights lost in the blurry universe of glossy celebrity magazines, Lee stealing booze from the supermarket.

They never meant to get mixed up in a murder, but after Billy Logan is killed, the teenagers are on the run and need a place to hide. As the winter closes in, Leila and Lee take flight to the Scottish Highlands. The caretaker Frank, full of drink and deceit, offers them shelter in a hunting lodge. Just as the pair find refuge, the first guests of the season begin to arrive.

Rounds is an exhibition of nine cutting-edge Western Australian artists that radically engage with issues of peer influence through a self-generating exhibition process. Working through a series of four cycles, it started on 5 September 2009 and continues through 27 March 2010. Each artist responds to a work made in the previous cycle by another artist in the group. The fruits of this ambitious and transparent creative process will be brought together and curated in a dynamic installation throughout PICA's central galleries, which will display the 32 artworks created in each of the four cycles.

Bevan Honey will develop an ambitious new body of work for PICA's Westend gallery consisting of futile machines alongside architectural and drawn elements that explore the opposing impulses of excess and restraint. Modernist utopias, failed buildings projects, financial burn outs and economic crashes and recovery are interrogated using scaled up drawings, models, stencils, mark making and inventions. Honey's expanded drawing practice contemplates multiple histories - art histories, as well as the cultural and geo-political histories of the state.

PICA is proud to present the first Australian showing of Berlin-based Ignacio Uriarte's new film entitled The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow (2009). Actor/comedian Michael Winslow, famous for his role in the slapstick Police Academy movies and his gifted ability to orally mimic any sound, is seen in a studio recording an oral history of the typewriter. The title of the work dictates the content of the film as the title phrase is typed repeatedly through the keystrokes of 32 different typewriters,each mimicked by Winslow.

Nearly every model of typewriter from the 1880s to the 1980s is sampled, allowing the viewer to contemplate a century of war correspondence, manifestoes, literary classics and private love letters.

YCulture Metro is a funding program that provides arts grants of up to $3,000 for young people aged between 12-26. YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.

YCulture can provide funds for projects (such as all-ages gigs) and skills development initiatives (such as workshops and creative developments).

Applications are open all year with a guaranteed 10 day turn around.
