A gritty contemporary tale of young love, looming tragedy and the unexpected.

Lee is a cocky teenager who seems to attract trouble, Silent Leila's a 17 year-old Muslim girl looking for a way to fit in. She spends her Friday nights lost in the blurry universe of glossy celebrity magazines, Lee stealing booze from the supermarket.

They never meant to get mixed up in a murder, but after Billy Logan is killed, the teenagers are on the run and need a place to hide. As the winter closes in, Leila and Lee take flight to the Scottish Highlands. The caretaker Frank, full of drink and deceit, offers them shelter in a hunting lodge. Just as the pair find refuge, the first guests of the season begin to arrive.

They all have something else in common – they began their journeys as art students, just like the talented students of Visual Art at Central Institute of Technology. Like our students, they emerged into the art world with creative ideas and works that inspired, challenged, shocked, asked questions and even screamed.

How lucky are those people who bought a Pollock before his works were revered and sought after? How would you like the opportunity to do something similar?

Here is your chance: Central Institute of Technology’s graduating students are holding an auction of their artworks. In addition to inspiring pieces by the students, many well-known Perth artists have donated works specifically created for the auction; Brian McKay and Jo Darbyshire to name just two. The auction is being held to raise funds for the students’ end of year graduation show. Pieces are uniformly presented in (- or around -) a 227 x 310mm frame, ready to hang/display, and will be sold to the individual highest bidder – no fuss, no haggling, no gallery fees. You will be offered everything from painting to sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, digital art, illustration – and anything in between.

You might just secure a piece by the Next Big Name in contemporary art.

Rounds is an exhibition of nine cutting-edge Western Australian artists that radically engage with issues of peer influence through a self-generating exhibition process. Working through a series of four cycles, it started on 5 September 2009 and continues through 27 March 2010. Each artist responds to a work made in the previous cycle by another artist in the group. The fruits of this ambitious and transparent creative process will be brought together and curated in a dynamic installation throughout PICA's central galleries, which will display the 32 artworks created in each of the four cycles.

Bevan Honey will develop an ambitious new body of work for PICA's Westend gallery consisting of futile machines alongside architectural and drawn elements that explore the opposing impulses of excess and restraint. Modernist utopias, failed buildings projects, financial burn outs and economic crashes and recovery are interrogated using scaled up drawings, models, stencils, mark making and inventions. Honey's expanded drawing practice contemplates multiple histories - art histories, as well as the cultural and geo-political histories of the state.

PICA is proud to present the first Australian showing of Berlin-based Ignacio Uriarte's new film entitled The History of the Typewriter Recited by Michael Winslow (2009). Actor/comedian Michael Winslow, famous for his role in the slapstick Police Academy movies and his gifted ability to orally mimic any sound, is seen in a studio recording an oral history of the typewriter. The title of the work dictates the content of the film as the title phrase is typed repeatedly through the keystrokes of 32 different typewriters,each mimicked by Winslow.

Nearly every model of typewriter from the 1880s to the 1980s is sampled, allowing the viewer to contemplate a century of war correspondence, manifestoes, literary classics and private love letters.

YCulture Metro is a funding program that provides arts grants of up to $3,000 for young people aged between 12-26. YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.
