A collaboration between beat makers and filmmakers. The pitch: Saturday 23rd, get as many local beat makers and filmmakers together. Pair up the beat makers and send them away with a filmmaker to document the collaboration process. There is a $30 budget for the day between each pair, to acquire records, tapes, toys whatever they need to get some tracks down. Each team will meet the next day at the bakery and listen to what everyone came up with. The tracks and videos will then be released online for free download each day throughout the following and will be screened the week after at the 3ON3 Asphalt comp.

The City of Perth is calling on all Ferris Bueller and Molly Ringwald fans to head to the Piazza in October for a special series paying tribute to filmmaker John Hughes.

A Gen X legend, Hughes is credited for writing, directing and producing some of the most successful movies of the 80s and early 90s.

Screening over the last two weekends in October, the Northbridge Piazza will screen 11 of John Hughes most well known films including Ferris Buellers Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, National Lampoons Vacation and Uncle Buck. The retrospective will also feature the new Hughes documentary Dont You Forget About Me.

Gainsbourg takes you on a journey into the world of a musical icon. Based on the remarkable life of iconic French singer, poet, writer and actor Serge Gainsbourg, the film is a bold and evocative imagining of the precocious talent whose music, style and joie de vivre is adored by many. From Gainsbourg's youth growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris, when he was called Lucien Ginsberg, through to his transformation into the hard-living showman, enfant terrible and successful song-writer of the 60s and 70s (famous for his glamorous lovers including Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin), to his debauched notoriety in the 80s.

Innovative in its visuals and narrative, the project features special effects from the makers of Pan's Labyrinth creating touches to assist in making Gainsbourg groundbreaking cinema. We glimpse the fantasy world that drove his inspiration, the women he loved and lost and most of all, the music that made him a legend.

Join two of your local authors at the State Library of Western Australia for a ‘question and answer’ panel discussion which will allow the audience to consider aspects of writing and publishing in WA today.

Featuring award winning author of Jasper Jones, Craig Silvey, and previous recipient of the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards for fiction, Simone Lazaroo. UK Artists Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead, will be pounding the streets of the Perth CBD for five days in search of 'locals' to discuss yesterday's news stories from The West Australian newspaper in order to painstakingly re-create it anew. The Perth and Sydney Echo is a free tabloid newspaper created, published and circulated by FrenchMottershead. Participants are approached on the city street and invited to choose a person/s in a reported situation they can empathize with and re-create their own version. This new record of events will be eventually published as The Perth and Sydney Echo.

PICA is pleased to present the first Australian showing of award winning multi-screen video installation Sekilala by Yuka and Kentaro Shimura, a Japanese brother and sister artistic duo that work together as SHIMURABROS.

SHIMURABROS are well known in Japan and across Asia and Europe for their inventive and pioneering approach to the motion picture. With Sekilala (2006-2008) the SHIMRABROS have taken their interest in the motion picture into a new realm by extending film beyond its two-dimensional limitations and employing advanced 3D technology and virtual reality programming.

Sekilala, is a three-screen immersive video installation, shot on super 16mm, filmed in Prague and with a storyline inspired by the controversial image of a mouse with what appears to be a human ear growing on its back. A family drama in which the father is obsessed with bio-furniture erratically unfolds in multiple, fractured stories. Projected onto three screens and randomly configured in twenty-six short sequences, the same story is never experienced twice, and the viewer becomes the editor of an infinite and complex film.

Objects to Live By: The Art of John Meade is the first major survey exhibition of one of Australia’s leading sculptors and is currently on display PICA.

Featuring more than 17 sculptural works ranging in scale from intimate objects on table tops to architecturally scaled wall works, this exhibition brings together Meade’s larger floor-based and suspended forms, smaller 'table sculptures', and an ensemble from a collaborative installation.

Often employing geometry and soft organic forms, John Meade works in an intuitive way to materialise his ideas, creating tightly orchestrated pieces that explore the metaphysical, the surreal and the fetishistic. Tapping into the real and the subconscious, playing with scale and expectation, Meade uses minimalism and messiness, the deliberate and the accidental, to explore extremes of form and intensities of emotion.

John Meade is a critically acclaimed Melbourne-based artist who has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions since 1995. His work is also held in numerous collections, including those of Monash University; the Museum of Contemporary Art; Heide Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Victoria.

An interest in diagrams, patterns, series and systems by eight influential contemporary artists are the focus of this critical new exhibition at PICA.

Love of Diagrams brings together over 50 key works by leading and emerging international and Australian artists, many of whom who will be exhibited for the first time this country.

YCulture Metro is a funding program that provides arts grants of up to $3,000 for young people aged between 12-26. YCulture Metro targets young metropolitan artists who are at an entry level in their arts practice and have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects.

YCulture can provide funds for projects (such as all-ages gigs) and skills development initiatives (such as workshops and creative developments).
