Using verbatim material and original writing, Virgie fuses intimate storytelling and a soundtrack ranging from Tchaikovsky to Nick Cave to capture snapshots of an extraordinary life.

This fictionalized account of a remarkable story will be the first chance for Australian audiences to become acquainted with this little known risk-taker.

Fresh from an acclaimed, sold out season in Melbourne, The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights and Upstart Theatre Company proudly present ‘Sleepyhead’ by award-winning Perth playwright Nathaniel Moncrieff as part of Perth’s FRINGE WORLD Festival from 6 February 2012.

Set on an isolated property somewhere in the woodlands of Western Australia’s southern region, ‘Sleepyhead’ revolves around two young sisters – one crippled, one mercilessly cruel.

When the girls’ father leaves to borrow money from a far-away brother, they are left alone to fend for themselves. This proves the catalyst for a series of unsettling events: a dead chicken, mysterious phone calls, a blood splattered visitor and the spectre of the girls’ dead mother.

Winner of the 2009 Fellowship of Australian Writers’ Di Cranston award, as well as shortlisted for the prestigious Griffin Award in 2010, ‘Sleepyhead’ is a darkly funny, “convincingly exasperating piece of Australian gothic” [Andrew Fuhrmann, Curtain Call].

Marion Borgelt is one of Australia’s most eminent artists, well known for her paintings, sculptures and public artworks. Time, space, light and motion are all themes that Marion’s work has examined for several years, and she continues this exploration in her current exhibition; Musical Geometry. She is fascinated by how light behaves in certain environments: how it bends, folds and curls providing sensory encounters. Her artworks often reference notions of sequential movement that calibrates time and change in a universe of perpetual motion. Marion has been exhibiting professionally for over 35 years and has received many significant awards. Her work can be found in more than 40 major public collections and in a further 22 corporate collections.

Kimtortion, an extremely flexible young starlet ran away to the circus and met Jaan, a German backpacker with an uncanny ability to juggle anything and everything! The two performers fell in love almost instantly and wowed audiences with talents the likes of which people had never seen before! Their fantastic career seemed to be cut short when one day Kimtortion fell from a great height whilst rigging for aerial performances. Sadly Kim had lost the use of her legs but Jaan picked her up and carried her like a princess from show to show! They now perform the legendary Ragdoll act where Kimtortion's exquisite flexibility and upper body strength shines through. A Truly amazing performance team!


Our slightly over hyperactive and insane German Scientist Dr Barry Umenema will be back to host us through the evening. He'll drag you giggling and screaming through his bizarre games and throw lollies at you whenever he damn feels like it.

Easels are welcome up the back and remember to bring drop sheets if you are doing some flamboyant ink or paintwork. As always the bar is fully stocked to help loosen that creative mind of yours!
